pirate terrorizes local NZ supermarket

January 16, 2026

Yesterday afternoon there was a pirate at the supermarket.

We dropped in to pick up a few things for dinner. As we lined up at the checkout, there he was in full regalia, from the tricorn hat to the pirate-blouse and pantaloons, hoisting the Jolly Roger for plunder and pillage.

Or maybe just the meat pies he purchased like an orderly law-abiding citizen.

It’s another world up here in the far north of New Zealand.

Fortunately it’s not too hard to keep the food intake on track even with pirates nearby.

Minus a few snacks and indulgences, it’s pretty easy. The trick I’ve found is to keep a tiny core of easily tracked numbers front and center, and don’t worry about anything else.

It’s vacation.

Get your skeleton of essentials in place and you can adjust from there.

Writing the words is one thing. Knowing how to do it, how to make it happen, how to live it… that’s not always easy.

It’s a skill, and like any skill, it involves a bundle of micro-skills.

Learning how to stay resilient with your food during lifestyle shocks and stresses (yes, even a holiday counts as a stress and shock to the routine) is one of them.

Easy to say, but not always so easy to put into practice.

People make this harder than it has to be by spending attention on things that don’t matter much, and giving very little energy to the things that matter greatly, far as results go.

So it is. That’s the nature of the human beast.

I’m already working with a few people to see if we can’t untangle this knot of self-imposed limitations.

If you’re interested, stay tuned. There will be more opportunities in the near future.

In the meantime…

Any questions? Any problems? Send them over and let me know. I might even answer them.
